Men’s Sheds Canada Research

Men’s Sheds Canada is at the forefront of addressing the pressing issues of older men’s mental health and social isolation. MSC’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of older men includes research initiatives aimed at understanding and enhancing the effectiveness of the Men’s Shed network across Canada.

Men’s Sheds Canada’s Research Committee includes academics and practitioners with expertise in Men’s Sheds, gerontology, healthy aging, mental health, and men’s health. Partnering with academic institutions and collaborating with various agencies, MSC has developed a robust research agenda driven by a commitment to generating actionable insights, fostering collaboration, and advocating for policies that prioritize the health and wellness of older men. This research agenda is focused on:

  1. Examining Health and Well-being of Older Men: Through comprehensive studies and data collection, MSC aims to deepen understanding of the unique health challenges faced by older men. This includes exploring factors such as mental health, physical well-being, social isolation and loneliness, and community connectedness. By identifying trends, disparities, and effective projects and activities, programs and supports can be developed to meet the specific needs of this demographic.

  1. Assessing the Effectiveness of Men’s Sheds and the Men’s Shed Network: Central to MSC’s research agenda is the evaluation of the effectiveness of Men’s Sheds in fostering social and community connections, enhancing mental health outcomes, and promoting overall well-being among older men. In addition, research focuses on assessing the effectiveness of the Men’s Sheds provincial and national networks in growing the number of Sheds, supporting sustainability of individual Sheds, and raising awareness of the Men’s Shed movement and its role in supporting the well-being of older men. Through surveys, longitudinal studies, and qualitative data, MSC is gathering insights into factors contributing to the networks’ success and identifying areas for improvement. This research informs program enhancements within individual Sheds, provincial associations, and MSC, as well as providing valuable insights for expanding across diverse communities and strengthening the Men’s Shed network as a vital resource for older adults nationwide.

  1. Advocacy for Policy Strengthening: Through evidence-based research and strategic partnerships, MSC seeks to inform policymakers about the pressing health issues affecting older men. By highlighting the positive impact of initiatives such as Men’s Sheds, MSC aims to influence policy decisions that promote inclusivity, accessibility, and support for older men’s health and social participation.

  1. Knowledge Dissemination and Mobilization: By forging partnerships with academic institutions, governmental agencies, healthcare and social service providers, and community organizations, MSC ensures research efforts are multidisciplinary, comprehensive, relevant, and effective. Through knowledge sharing, resource pooling, and collective action, MSC aims to advance the well-being of older men across Canada through dissemination of evidence-based strategies and programs.
